Video: Speed Camera Lottery system a Volkswagen Fun Theory winner

Automotive giant Volkswagen is aiming to make the world a better place one smile at a time through its experimental campaign, known as ‘The Fun Theory’.

The concept is a simple one: by making something fun, you can positively influence people’s behavior.

The latest idea to be put into practice was ‘The Speed Camera Lottery’, designed by American Kevin Richardson.

It works like this: A speed camera takes a photo of all the vehicles that pass. Their speed is recorded and displayed on a screen with either a thumbs up or thumbs down. All drivers over the limit receive a fine and the money is paid into a lottery pool. All drivers under the limit go into the draw to win the collected lottery money.

Volkswagen is claiming a mini victory for Speed Camera Lottery system. Over three days, 24,857 cars passed the speed camera. The average speed was reduced from 32km/h before the experiment to 25km/h during the experiment.
