2021 Mercedes-Benz G-Class price and specs: Diesel returns, AMG price rise
The iconic G-Wagon gains a new diesel option, but the AMG G 63 sees a mammoth price increase for the new year.

The 2021 Mercedes-Benz G 400d has been announced, signalling the first diesel G-Class in three years.
Joining the G 63 in the range, the diesel G-Wagen uses a 3.0-litre 'OM656' turbo diesel six-cylinder engine putting out 243kW and 700Nm.
The G 400d offers proper off-road credentials for Mercedes-Benz buyers, with a ladder chassis, full-time four-wheel drive, and front, centre, and rear differentials, complete with a nine-speed automatic transmission with low-range.
Hitting 100km/h from a standstill in the diesel G-Class takes a claimed 6.4 seconds, while combined fuel economy is listed as 9.5 litres per 100 kilometres driven.
The G 400d gets adaptive dampers as standard, allowing the suspension to suit whatever terrain it's driving on – whether on- or off-road.
Also standard is the 'Stainless Steel Package' providing a number of exterior styling cues, including a protective strip with black trim insert, running boards down the side, a spare wheel cover, chrome highlights at the front grille, and 19-inch alloy wheels.
Occupants enjoy three-zone climate control, leather upholstery, heated electric front seats, multifunction Nappa leather steering wheel, sliding glass sunroof, and a 12.3-inch 'Comand' infotainment system, complete with satellite navigation with three-dimensional maps, dynamic route guidance, 360-degree cameras, DAB+ digital radio, and Apple CarPlay and Android Auto capability – with sound courtesy of a 15-speaker Burmester audio system.
To assist with any four-wheel-drive adventures, an 'Off-Road Information Centre' provides the driver with altitude, compass, body angle, as well as wheel angle and articulation.
The new diesel G-Wagen also gets multibeam LED headlights, and Parking Package with Park Assist 'Parktronic' – a semi-autonomous system for parallel parking.
The SUV comes with the company's 'Driving Assistance Package' safety suite, with radar cruise control, blind-spot assist, lane-keep assist, traffic sign recognition, and 'Pre-Safe' system, which senses an impending accident and prepares the vehicle before impact.
The 2021 Mercedes-Benz G 400d will arrive into Australian showrooms in July 2021.
2021 Mercedes-AMG G 63 price and specs
The 2021 Mercedes-AMG G 63 adds another layer of luxury and performance over the G 400d, as well as a $30,665 price increase over last year's model.
The flagship SUV is powered by a 4.0-litre twin-turbo petrol V8 producing 430kW of power and 850Nm of torque, mated to AMG's 'Speedshift 9G-Tronic' nine-speed automatic transmission.
The G 63 offers a selectable AMG Performance exhaust, as well as driving mode and suspension control.
The 0-100km/h sprint takes a claimed 4.5 seconds, while fuel economy is listed as 13.1L/100km combined.
Inside, seats and door cards are trimmed in Nappa leather, Dinamica synthetic suede roof liner, leather dashboard, and a Nappa leather-trimmed AMG, with the rear outer seats also heated. The infotainment system adds a digital television tuner.
The exterior distinguishes itself with flared wheel arches, front apron, red brake callipers, AMG badging, and a set of 21-inch alloy wheels.
