2022 Nissan Patrol Nismo spied undisguised

While here in Australia we may think of the 2021 Nissan Patrol 'Y62' as the top-value competitor to the likes of the Toyota LandCruiser, in parts of the Middle East the Patrol is the car to aspire to.

To prove that point, Nissan’s go-fast Nismo division has previously prepared performance tweaked versions of the Patrol for consumption in the United Arab Emirates.

Now, with the facelifted model as the mainstay of the Patrol range, a new Patrol Nismo looks almost ready to be revealed.

Spied undisguised during what appears to be a marketing or commercial shoot, Instagram account Jokerr.cars has revealed the 2022 Nissan Patrol Nismo in action ahead of its official unveiling.

The standout Nismo styling change is the reworked front bumper, which appears to feature more mesh than a screen door factory. The deeper front bumper runs into colour-matched wheel arch flares and side steps, before terminating in a similarly aggressive vented rear bumper, all offset with red pinstriping.

The wheels appear to be carry-over 22-inch Rays alloys as seen on earlier versions of the Patrol Nismo. The quad-tipped exhaust is also expected to be another carry-over item.

While there’s little official info available about the new Patrol Nismo, based on its predecessor, it’s safe to expect engine specifications will largely carry over.

Given the regular Patrol’s 5.6-litre petrol V8 kept its 298kW and 560Nm outputs following its mid-life facelift, expect the Patrol Nismo to turn up the heat only a little, but not venture too far beyond the 319kW of the model that preceded it.

Torque is also unlikely to budge beyond 560Nm, though responsiveness across the rev range is set to be a feature, as it was with the pre-facelift Nismo.

As is so often the case with Nismo-enhanced models, power isn’t everything. Nismo-tuned suspension with Bilstein shock absorbers and more responsive steering found their way into the Patrol Nismo before, and are expected to appear again.

One element Middle East-bound Patrols received that Australia missed out on with the 2019 facelift was an updated interior and a more modern infotainment interface. Expect the Nismo version to also add plush quilted leather and an array of sporty contrast elements.

Don’t expect to see a Nismo-honed version of the Patrol in local showrooms, however.

Given the popularity of towing and touring Down Under, and Australia’s often rugged outback conditions, Nissan Australia is much more likely to make a locally-tweaked, off-road-focused Patrol Warrior its flagship of choice.
