Audi plug-in hybrid coming in 2014

Audi has revealed it plans to become the world’s leading manufacturer of premium electric vehicles and sell more than 100,000 electric vehicles per year by 2020.

Audi manager for electric mobility strategy, Franciscus van Meel, said a range of alternative fuel vehicles would be launched before the beginning of the next decade.

“We will successively bring out a variety of hybrid models and electric vehicles, such as our first plug-in hybrid in 2014,” Mr van Meel said.

The plug-in is one of Audi’s best kept secrets, with next to no leaks or hints as to what type of vehicle we can expect.

In the short term, Audi will release hybrid versions of the A8 and Q5 in around 12 months time, a hybrid A6 most likely in 2012, and a range of electric vehicles, beginning with the special edition Audi R8 e-tron also in 2012.

Audi recently spent €65 million ($88 million) establishing an EV development and testing facility at its Ingolstadt headquarters, which will one day house 840 workers.

Earlier this year, Audi unveiled its ambition for five percent of its sales to be EVs by 2020, and to increase the efficiency of its petrol- and diesel-powered vehicles by 30 percent.
