2021 Morgan Plus 8 GTR: British brand teases upcoming track car

The ‘gloves off’ track-focused GTR variant of the existing Morgan Plus 8 will be be powered by a BMW-sourced V8 engine producing in excess of 270kW.

Eccentric British manufacturer Morgan has released its first sketches of an upcoming V8 track car, known as the Plus 8 GTR.

Slated for arrival no later than September 2021, just nine examples of the Morgan Plus 8 GTR will be built.

According to the marque, several unused Plus 8 chassis were recently reacquired from a now-defunct third-party project – these will be modified to underpin the new, more powerful GTR variant.

Drive comes from a BMW-sourced 4.8-litre V8, sent to the ground via a six-speed manual or six-speed automatic transmission. While an official power figure has yet to be confirmed by Morgan, this powertrain produces 269kW in its “out-of-the-box” unmodified configuration.

In an official statement Jonathan Wells, Morgan’s head of design, said: “Reviving a V8-powered Morgan at the current time may not seem like the obvious choice for a manufacturer firmly focused on new platforms and powertrains.”

“This project has allowed Morgan’s design and engineering teams to revisit some of their favourite elements of past Morgan models, as well as experiment with some features that we hope will appear on future Morgan cars,” he added.

Pricing is yet to be confirmed, but multiple European outlets have predicted the low-volume (and largely hand-built) car will start in the region of €250,000 (AU$390,000).

Meanwhile, production of the instantly-recognisable Morgan 3-Wheeler (shown below) is set to end this year due to issues with environmental compliance overseas. An electrified variant – which was previously developed but never went into production – could potentially be revived in its place.
