The 2021 MG HS plug-in hybrid (PHEV) will go on sale in Australia in March, the brand has confirmed.

MG's first plug-in hybrid model will launch locally next month, with the HS PHEV set to join the Anglo-Chinese brand's first electric vehicle, the ZS EV, in showrooms.

Powering the model is a variant of the standard HS's 1.5-litre turbocharged four-cylinder petrol engine, mated to a 90kW electric motor and a 16.6kWh lithium-ion battery, sent to the front wheels through a conventional automatic transmission, with Australian government documents indicating it will feature six speeds.

European models claim a combined power output and electric-only range of 190kW and 51km respectively – whether Australian models could differ isn't clear, given output and range figures of 217kW/480Nm and 75km have been floated internationally.

MG Australia claims a 0-100km/h sprint time of 6.9 seconds, matched by combined fuel economy of 1.7L/100km and CO2 emissions of just 39 grams per kilometre.

Australian pricing and specifications will be announced closer to the plug-in HS's March 2021 arrival date.

Above and bottom: UK-spec MG HS PHEV.

In the UK, the MG HS PHEV is offered with a choice of two variants, priced from £29,995 (AU$54,000) for the entry-level Excite model, which features niceties including a full suite of active safety tech, 18-inch wheels, leatherette trim, dual-zone climate control, a 10.1-inch touchscreen and more.

However, it's worth noting vehicle prices in the UK (and Europe) are typically higher than those in Australia – for reference, the flagship, petrol-only MG HS Essence is priced from $40,690 drive-away in Australia, versus £24,995 (AU$45,000) for an equivalent model in Britain.

Apply that difference to the plug-in hybrid and a base price of around $48,000 could be on the cards, for a variant with standard equipment levels equivalent to Australia's petrol-powered Vibe.

A flagship model could be offered locally for around $52,900, with niceties like a sunroof, larger 18-inch wheels and LED headlights.
