2021 Subaru Outback Wilderness Edition on wish list for Australia

An even more rugged version of the Subaru Outback is being readied to go on sale in the US. It’s yet to be confirmed for Australia but the local division has raised its hand for the new model variant.

A more rugged version of the 2021 Subaru Outback – called the Wilderness Edition – is about to go on sale in the US and is on the wish list for Australia.

While the new-generation Subaru Outback has only just arrived in local showrooms, the model has been on sale in the US for a year and the company has already started to expand into limited-edition variants.

Dealers in the US were told this week about plans to introduce an even higher-riding version of the Subaru Outback – dubbed the Wilderness Edition – with the promise of more serious off-road potential.

Spy photos published overseas show a prototype fitting that description while undergoing testing in the US.

American Subaru dealers were also advised there would be a Wilderness Edition of the Subaru Forester, however images of that model are yet to be revealed.

When asked about the possibility of Wilderness Editions of the Outback and Forester coming to Australia, a statement from Subaru said: “We’re always interested in developments from the factory in Japan and while we currently have no plans to expand the range, we’ll be watching progress in the US with interest.”

In the meantime, the new-generation Subaru Outback has just gone on sale in Australia. Read about the price and specs here. Read our first Australian road test here.
