2022 Subaru WRX due in Australian showrooms this year

Christmas could come early for fans of the Subaru WRX, with the local arrival being pulled forward to late this year rather than early 2022 as originally expected.

The new Subaru WRX performance sedan is now due in Australian showrooms by the end of this year, rather than early 2022 as originally forecast.

“While it’s not confirmed we are hopeful of seeing the new Subaru WRX here by the end of this year, pending any unforeseen production delays,” said a Subaru Australia representative.

While the fifth-generation Subaru WRX is yet to be unveiled, these computer-generated images previously published by CarAdvice are a clue to what it might look like.

The images are based on the next Subaru Levorg wagon which is understood to share much of the new WRX’s front-end bodywork and styling cues.

However, we won’t know for sure until the 2022 Subaru WRX is unveiled in the coming months.

Also secret is the engine under the bonnet, although speculation overseas suggests the new Subaru WRX will use a version of the 2.4-litre turbocharged horizontally-opposed ‘boxer’ four-cylinder offered in the new Subaru Outback in the US.

Reports from Japan’s Best Car magazine estimate the Subaru Outback engine will increase in output from 190kW/376Nm to 213kW when installed in the 2022 Subaru WRX.

If true, that output would be 16kW more than the 197kW/350Nm in the current, fourth-generation Subaru WRX.

Meanwhile, CarAdvice has previously reported the flagship Subaru WRX STI is slated to return in 2022, powered by an even higher-output version of the 2.4-litre turbo which, according to some reports, will develop up to 298kW and 489Nm.
