Volkswagen confident about reaching 7 million sales in 2010

Martin Winterkorn, Volkswagen CEO, is adamant the company will crack the seven-million sales barrier by the end of this year. The company also wants to jump ahead of Toyota as number one manufacturer in terms of sales by 2018.

Last year, Toyota sold 7.81 million cars and even though sales were down by 1.16 million compared with 2008, the figure was still much higher than Volkswagen's sales of 6.29 million units. Volkswagen is confident though and was the only manufacturer in world to report sales gains in 2009 compared with 2008, after it sold 6.29 million compared with 6.27 million.

Winterkorn said yesterday that the company is doing well this year, saying, "Volkswagen Group is benefiting disproportionately from the upswing in the most important car markets", and said the company should reach the seven-million barrier for 2010.

It terms of competition, Volkswagen currently sits at No.3 in automotive sales on a global level, behind Toyota at top spot and General Motors in second. General Motors sold 7.48 million cars last year, a figure that was down by 11 percent compared with the economic downturn of 2008.

Volkswagen plans to hit the 10-million mark by 2018, taking top position from Toyota in the process.
