2021 SsangYong Rexton: Australian specs revealed online ahead of March arrival

Large SUV to be offered in two variants, both wearing an updated look inside and out.

Australian specifications and equipment details of the facelifted 2021 SsangYong Rexton have been outed online.

First leaked and confirmed for an Australian launch in October 2020, local details of SsangYong's updated Ford Everest rival were published on its public website, ahead of first deliveries in the second half of March.

A revised exterior design headlines the updates to the Rexton, with a new patterned grille and restyled headlights and tail-lights, plus a tweaked cabin design with a new steering wheel and different trim options.

Two variants will be offered – ELX and Ultimate – with the entry-level EX seemingly dropped from the updated range.

While pricing has yet to be confirmed, it's fair to expect moderate price rises across the range, likely in the range of a few thousand dollars.

Opening the Australian line-up is the ELX which, in pre-facelift guise, was priced from $46,990 drive-away.

Standard equipment, according to the website, will include an 8.0-inch infotainment touchscreen with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, power-adjustable front seats with ventilation, leather-wrapped steering wheel and shifter, LED headlights with automatic high-beams, keyless entry, push-button start and dual-zone climate control.

There's also 18-inch alloy wheels, tyre pressure monitoring, heated power-adjustable door mirrors, fog lights, front and rear parking sensors, nine airbags and a full suite of active safety technologies including autonomous emergency braking, lane-departure warning, blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, hill descent control and driver attention monitoring.

Stepping up to the Ultimate – which was priced in pre-update guise from $52,990 drive-away – adds 20-inch alloy wheels, leather trim, driver's seat memory, a heated steering wheel, wireless smartphone charging, illuminated sill plates, power-operated tailgate and a 360-degree camera.

Powering all models is an uprated 2.2-litre turbocharged four-cylinder developing 148kW of power and 441Nm of torque – up 15kW and 21Nm, and a near-perfect match for another seven-seat large SUV, the 148kW/440Nm Kia Sorento.

Drive is sent to all four wheels through an eight-speed automatic transmission, replacing the outgoing car's seven-speed unit.

Combined fuel economy is rated at 8.9L/100km – up over the outgoing model's 8.3L/100km claim – while braked towing capacity sits at a class-leading 3500kg.

The 2021 SsangYong Rexton will go on sale in Australia in mid to late March.
