2021 Volkswagen Transporter T6.1 price and specs

The 2021 'T6.1' update brings more safety and tech to Volkswagen's range of vans and utes.

  • 2021 Volkswagen Transporter price and specs detailed
  • Van, Crewvan and cab-chassis variants on offer, priced from $38,990 before on-road costs.
  • New styling, updated technology for the new year
  • Multiple engines available across different variants, with available all-wheel-drive.

Pricing and specification details for the 2021 Volkswagen Transporter T6.1 range have been announced, with the van, Crewvan and cab-chassis ute variants gaining new features and technology.

Safety has seen an upgrade, with low-speed autonomous emergency braking, driver attention monitoring and multi-collision braking fitted as standard across the range. Transporter Van and Crewvan models gain Cross-Wind Assist, blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert and rear parking sensors, along with a reversing camera.

A 6.5-inch touchscreen sits in the centre of the dashboard, featuring Apple CarPlay and Android Auto smartphone mirroring and Bluetooth.

Other standard features shared across the updated Volkswagen Transporter range include automatic halogen headlights, a full-sized spare wheel, steel wheels (measuring 16 inches in diameter on Crewvan models, 17 inches on the cab-chassis, and either 16 or 17 inches on the van), black cloth seat upholstery, manual air conditioning, rain-sensing wipers, power windows, heated power-folding door mirrors and cruise control.

Changes for 2021 include a new electromechanical power steering system – replacing the previous hydraulic setup – and updated exterior and interior styling, the former including a new grille and restyled bumpers.

Van, Crewvan and Cab Chassis ute body styles are on offer, all of which share a five-year, unlimited kilometre warranty. A full breakdown of pricing and engine specifications for each variant and body style can be found below.

2021 Volkswagen Transporter T6.1 Van price and specs

A wide range of Euro 5 and Euro 6-compliant diesel engines are on offer for Transporter T6.1 buyers.

Opening the range is a 81kW/250Nm 2.0-litre turbo diesel four-cylinder, sending power to the front wheels through a five-speed manual transmission. This engine offers the cheapest ticket into a Transporter van, with prices starting from $38,990 before on-road costs.

Mid-spec models feature a 110kW/340Nm version of the 2.0-litre engine, paired to a choice of six-speed manual or seven-speed dual-clutch automatic transmissions. Front-wheel-drive is standard, with 4Motion all-wheel-drive to become available as an option on the automatic variant later in the first quarter of 2021 (by the end of March 2021).

The most powerful option is a twin-turbocharged 146kW/450Nm variant of the 2.0-lite mill, paired solely a seven-speed dual clutch automatic gearbox. Front-wheel-drive is standard, with 4Motion all-wheel-drive to be available as an option later in the first quarter of this year.

Two wheelbase lengths are available: a 3000mm short-wheelbase variant (with a 4904mm overall length), and a 3400mm long-wheelbase model (with a 5304mm overall length). All three powertrains can be had with the former, however the latter only offers the two most powerful engine options.

Buyers requiring more load height can opt for a high roof variant, increasing overall vehicle height from 1990mm to 2477mm.

Prices for the new 2021 Transporter van rise up to $56,990 plus on-road costs for a long-wheelbase van with the 146kW 4Motion powertrain.

Claimed combined fuel consumption ranges from 6.9L/100km for the least powerful drivetrain, to 8.0L/100km for the most powerful.

Befitting the wide range of end users, the Transporter T6.1 offers an array of functional options, including driver’s side sliding door, power-opening doors, additional tie-down points, floor and wall coverings, partitions, additional air conditioning systems, upgraded suspension and swivelling seats.

2021 Volkswagen Transporter T6.1 Crewvan price and specs

The Volkswagen Transporter T6.1 Crewvan formula is simple: take a Transporter van, and bolt in an extra row of three seats behind the front passengers.

Initially, only one choice of engine will be offered, a 110kW/340Nm 2.0-litre turbo diesel four-cylinder driving the front wheels through a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic. All-wheel-drive will be made available as an option by the end of March 2021.

Both short- and long-wheelbase variants will be offered.

While the van offers load area lengths of 2572mm and 2975mm in short and long wheelbase forms respectively, the Crewvan's extra seats cut those numbers to 1594mm and 1994mm respectively.

Pricing for the Transporter Crewvan starts from $51,490 for the short-wheelbase, front-drive Crewvan, while the all-paw long-wheelbase variant asks for $57,490.

2021 Volkswagen Transporter T6.1 Cab Chassis ute price and specs

This variant could serve as a potential alternative to the popular four-wheel drive ute market in Australia, offering 4Motion all-wheel-drive and a seven-speed dual clutch transmission as standard.

They're mated to the more powerful 145kW/450Nm version of the 2.0-litre diesel engine, though unlike its van and passenger siblings, the Cab Chassis does without an ‘AdBlue’ selective catalytic reduction (SCR) system.

Single-cab and dual-cab variants are available, both equipped with an aluminium dropside tray measuring 1940mm wide, and either 2939mm or 2169mm long, depending on seating configuration. Wheelbase on all variants is rated at 3400mm.

The Transporter Cab Chassis can fit three occupants in single-cab guise, and six occupants in dual-cab form. However, due to the tray-equipped body, the cab-chassis misses out on safety and convenience features like a rear view camera, rear parking sensors and blind-spot monitoring.

Pricing starts from $55,490 plus on-road costs for the front-wheel-drive Transporter Single Cab fitted with a tray, and tops out at $60,490 for a Dual Cab variant with all-wheel-drive.
