2021 GWM Ute to offer single-cab, cab-chassis bodies

The replacement for the Great Wall Steed cab-chassis is on its way, according to government documents.

The 2021 GWM Ute will soon be available with cab-chassis and single-cab pick-up bodies.

Documents lodged with the Australian Government detail the new GWM models, likely to be unveiled in the coming months.

Ute buyers will get a choice of two-wheel or four-wheel drive, with power coming from a 2.0-litre turbo diesel four-cylinder engine putting out 120kW and 400Nm.

While the single-cab GWM Ute pick-up will be available with either a six-speed manual or eight-speed ZF-built automatic transmission, at this stage the documents suggest the cab-chassis Ute will only be offered with a manual – though an auto option will likely be added in the future.

Official payload numbers have also yet to be announced, but it's expected GWM will offer a maximum capacity of approximately one tonne, depending on the option boxes ticked.

Like their dual-cab siblings, the new Ute models will offer a towing capacity of up to 3000kg.

Only two occupants will be catered for with the two-door bodies, with no three-seater bench option on the cards.

There's no word yet on how much of the tech and safety equipment will carry over from the dual-cab GWM Ute, but we'd wager its 9.0-inch infotainment system with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto will feature at a minimum.

Considering the outgoing Great Wall Steed cab-chassis is priced from $19,990 drive-away for a manual 4x2 model, and $21,990 drive-away for a manual 4x4, there's unlikely to be much of a change from those prices, despite the likely standard inclusion of the dual-cab's seven-year/unlimited kilometre warranty.

A spokesperson for GWM Australia said the single-cab and cab-chassis variants were still being considered for the local market, and wouldn't be drawn on a date for their arrival.
