Porsche to open assembly plant in Malaysia – report

If local media reporting proves accurate, this would be the first time Porsche AG operates its own production plant outside of its native Germany.

Porsche AG appears set to open a manufacturing facility in Malaysia, according to one of the country's leading local news outlets, The Edge Weekly.

If accurate, this would be the brand’s first plant outside of Germany.

It isn't the first time Porsche vehicles have been built overseas, however – the current Cayenne SUV is built at parent Volkswagen's factory in Slovakia.

The report suggests Porsche will partner with Inokom Corporation – a division of Malaysian-based trading and logistics conglomerate Sime Darby – to build and operate the site in the north-west state of Kedah.

It remains unclear what specific processes the facility will be used for, or if it will service markets outside of Malaysia.

While several other major media outlets have reported the claims, all cite The Edge Weekly report as the sole source.

CarAdvice has reached out to a spokesperson for Porsche for further comment. This story will be updated when more information becomes available.

Since 2015, as many as 17 car manufacturers – ranging from Toyota and Mazda, to Mercedes-Benz and BMW – have all built car components or full vehicles in Malaysia (or had them built by licensed operators), however the vast majority were produced solely for the local market, with many arriving as complete knock-down (CKD) kits.
