Electric Chevrolet C2 Corvette: 1500kW ‘hyperclassic’

Automotive design legends Peter Brock and Ian Callum have installed modern tech in one of the most beautiful cars of all time.

The instantly recognisable and bona-fide classic Chevrolet C2 Corvette is set to be reinvented as a 1470kW all-electric modern ‘hyperclassic’.

Small Irish company, Studio AVA, has enlisted the help of the C2 Corvette’s original designer, Peter Brock, and Jaguar, Aston Martin and Land Rover stylist Ian Callum, to help create what it hopes will combine “hyper-modern power and performance” with “the body and soul of a classic”.

Details are scarce on what has been dubbed the AVA Stingray, but the company is promising “to perfect this iconic American classic. Inspired by the original sketch, the final chapter of the C2 is being written – in its ultimate embodiment of timeless beauty”.

However, enlisting the services of Brock and Callum hints at the seriousness of the idea.

Brock, for those who don’t know, was one of the designers of the original C2 Corvette, along with GM’s Larry Shinoda. Brock was just 19 years old when he penned what would become an automotive icon, the youngest ever designer hired by General Motors. Brock is also known for penning the original Shelby Daytona Cobra, a replica of which Australia’s own Peter Brock was driving when he was killed in an accident in 2006.

In the video below, Brock explains the reasons for getting involved in the project.

Little else is known about the AVA Stingray at this stage, although the company’s social media posts suggest the all-electric C2 will feature somewhere between 882-1470kW and will only be built in small numbers with “each car’s creation embodying the unique personality of its owner”.

The Chevrolet C2 Corvette was available from 1963-67 and was originally powered by a 186kW 5.4-litre (327ci) V8. By the end of its lifecycle in 1967, displacement had blown out to 7.0-litres (427ci) with power increased to 324kW. The car was universally praised at the time for its grip, handling, and power and in 2004 was named as number five on the list of Top Sports Cars of the 1960s by highly regarded and influential US automotive magazine, Sports Car International.
