Volkswagen Microbus concept under development: report

A reborn version of the Volkswagen Microbus could be on the cards, according to a report in a UK-based publication.

VW design chief Klaus Bischoff confirmed to AutoExpress at the Los Angeles Auto Show that a Microbus-inspired project was currently on the drawing board.

“I would not be doing my job at Volkswagen properly if I was not thinking of bringing back the Camper,” Mr Bischoff said.

“The key question is 'What sort of car should we build?' It could be a traditional MPV, with a conventional interior, or we could be much bolder, designing a more flexible, versatile machine – perhaps one that is closer in spirit to the original model. It is not yet decided.”

Mr Bischoff said design teams from California and other centres around the world were working with Volkswagen Europe on the project.

A concept of the new Microbus is not expected before 2012.

Microbus rumours have sprung up continually since the sky blue concept first debuted at the Detroit Motor Show almost 10 years ago.

Mr Bischoff said financial issues – not a lack of public interest or demand – were behind the decision not to develop the 2001 vehicle beyond the concept stage.
