2022 Nissan Frontier unveiled: Navara’s American sibling updated

Nissan's answer to the Ford Ranger in North America has been heavily updated.

The 2022 Nissan Frontier has been revealed in the US overnight, with a host of updates to modernise the mid-size pick-up.

The Frontier is based on previous-generation Nissan Navara architecture, sitting below the large Nissan Titan pick-up, and Nissan's answer to the Ford Ranger and Toyota Tacoma in North America.

Powered by a 3.8-litre petrol V6 – a larger-capacity version of the 3.5-litre V6 found in our own Nissan Pathfinder – performance is listed as 231kW and 381Nm, running through a nine-speed automatic transmission with either rear- or all-wheel drive.

The 2022 Frontier gets Nissan's latest design language, but offers bolder, chunky styling and a high waistline, with virtually no remnants of the previous model to be found.

It's a similar story inside. Aimed at America's tradie population, the new pick-up offers plenty of storage areas in the cabin, while infotainment comes courtesy of an 8.0-inch screen with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto capability, wireless smartphone storage, and three different types of charging ports.

On the road, Nissan has improved handling with a thicker front sway-bar and revised rear sway-bar, improved the hydraulic steering with a 16 per cent quicker ratio, and added hydraulic cab mounts to reduce vibrations and harshness by up to 80 per cent.

While the new ute lags behind the Ford Ranger in safety equipment, it's a huge leap forward for the model, gaining Nissan's 'Safety Shield 360' suite of tech, which includes lane-departure warning, blind-spot warning, rear automatic emergency braking, and satellite navigation-linked cruise control.

The Frontier follows Nissan's recent playbook, in which the Japanese car maker has been relaunching new models based on older platforms. Not all-new exactly, but far more than a simple mid-life facelift, with the company pursuing this tactic on the X-Trail, Pathfinder, and upcoming 400Z.

The 2022 Nissan Frontier is priced from US$28,000 (AUD$37,000), topping out at US$40,000 (AU$52,700) for the dual-cab Pro-4X variant shown in these images.

Being a North American-only model, the Frontier won't be coming to Aussie shores. But those wanting an equivalent ute should look to the 2021 Nissan Navara – unveiled in November 2020 on more modern underpinnings – and priced between $33,890-$62,790 drive-away.
