MG ZS EV gets five-star ANCAP safety rating

The all-electric SUV's crash-safety rating is based on 2019 testing by Euro NCAP.

The MG ZS electric SUV has been awarded a five-star safety rating by the Australasian New Car Assessment Program (ANCAP) – even though the petrol equivalent on which it is based has a four-star score.

The electric MG is yet to be tested locally; the appraisal is based on 2019 results from the European New Car Assessment Programme (Euro NCAP).

The crash test program introduced more stringent safety criteria from 2020, which means the MG was measured against different standards compared to other recent five-star cars such as the Toyota Yaris hatch and Isuzu D-Max ute – both of which were assessed to the latest benchmark.

According to MG the car received the rating due to its "extensive list of driver safety equipment as standard."

"Furthermore, MG Pilot driver assistance suite plays a key part in MG Motor’s continued commitment to safety, and includes adaptive cruise control, front collision warning, emergency braking, speed assist and lane departure warnings plus others," the official statement continued.

The petrol variant of the ZS EV – known simply as the ZS – currently only gets a 4-star ANCAP safety rating, despite sharing many structural components.

A spokesperson for ANCAP told CarAdvice: "The MG ZS EV offers different characteristics to its (petrol) siblings, and therefore underwent a full suite of tests which resulted in good performance across all key areas of assessment."

The MG ZS EV develops 105kW/353Nm from its single electric motor, sent to the ground via the front wheels.

Voltage is drawn from a 44.5kWh battery, and this delivers a WLTP-certified driving range of up to 263km.

Priced from $43,990 plus on road costs, it is currently the cheapest all-electric car on the local market.
