Tesla Roadster launch delayed again says Elon Musk

Issues with the car's 'tri-motor drive system and advanced battery work' are to blame for the holdup, according to Elon Musk.

The second-generation Tesla Roadster has been delayed for a second time, according to CEO Elon Musk.

Production – and the first round of deliveries – are now reportedly scheduled for 2022.

Announced in 2017 and originally slated for launch in mid-2020, the new Roadster was previously pushed back due to the coronavirus pandemic.

In a recent Tweet, Musk – who is now estimated to be the world's richest man – announced the project faced new hurdles, and explained issues with the car's “tri-motor drive system and advanced battery work” were to blame for the holdup.

Billed as the "fastest production car ever made," the Roadster will reportedly accelerate from 0-100km/h in approximately 2.0 seconds – for context, the quickest production car currently on sale is the Porsche Taycan Turbo S, which takes an estimated 2.4 seconds to reach the same speed.

CarAdvice understands the production variant of the Roadster will have four seats, a detachable roof, a 200kWh battery pack, and a claimed range of 1000km.

According to Tesla, the vehicle's top speed will be in excess of 400km/h.

Pricing is yet to be announced, however Australians can currently put a $66,000 fully refundable deposit on the vehicle.
