The next-generation 2022 Mercedes-AMG C63 could extract over 400kW from its turbocharged four-cylinder hybrid system.

According to a report in the February 2021 issue of the UK's Car magazine, the next-gen C63 will produce a total of 410kW of power and 800Nm of torque, thanks to the smaller A45 S's 310kW/500Nm 2.0-litre engine and three electrified elements: a 150kW rear electric motor (operated independently of the gearbox), a starter-generator mild-hybrid system and an electrically-driven turbocharger.

Those outputs are 35kW and 100Nm up over the outgoing C63 S – despite half the cylinders, a move dictated by strict new European CO2 emissions rules – and a staggering 35kW/200Nm over the Mercedes-AMG's closest German rival, the new, six-cylinder BMW M3 Competition.

It's unclear whether those outputs will be produced by the 'base' C63, or a higher-performance S model.

Drive will be sent to all four wheels through a nine-speed automatic transmission and AMG's latest '4Matic+' variable all-wheel-drive system.

Car reports a 0-100km/h sprint time of 3.5 seconds for the new sedan – down 0.5 seconds over the outgoing, rear-drive model – towards a top speed of 291km/h.

However, the electrified power boost comes at the cost of weight, with the hybrid system reportedly adding 250kg of mass, taking the new C63's kerb weight to a hefty 2000kg – over 400kg more than the Alfa Romeo Giulia Quadrifoglio, another of the C63's class and performance rivals.

That's despite the four-cylinder reportedly being 60kg lighter than the outgoing bent-eight – a weight saving which the British publication claims grants the new AMG sedan a perfect 50:50 weight distribution.

Providing the juice for the electrified side of the powertrain is a lithium-ion battery of unknown capacity, said to employ a 400-volt electrical architecture (as used on most modern all-electric vehicles) for 64km of electric-only range and WLTP combined fuel economy of 3.0L/100km – the latter a significant improvement over its predecessor's 10.6L/100km claim.

Under the skin, adaptive dampers and offset tyre widths will feature – the latter comprising wider rear tyres to aid turn-in response and out-of-corner traction – as will 'drift' mode, likely disconnecting the front axle to allow the C63 to get sideways, as per the larger E63 S's system.

AMG fans will note this isn't the first time a four-cylinder hybrid-powered 2022 C63 has been rumoured, with Britain's Autocar breaking the news in 2019 – however, Car's report provides a number of significant additional details not previously known.

According to Car, the 2022 Mercedes-AMG C63 – or by its full name, the Mercedes-AMG C63 4Matic+ EQ Power Sport – will make its full debut by the end of 2021, before going on sale in Europe in early 2022.

While confirmation of Australian timing remains a long way out, assuming the model's European launch stays on track between now and its global debut, expect an Australian launch sometime in mid-2022.

Prior to the C63's launch, however, will be the introduction of the new-generation, standard C-Class range, led initially by a mid-tier AMG C53 (formerly C43) sports model, powered by a 48-volt mild-hybrid version of the A45 S's (and C63's) 2.0-litre turbo-four, likely developing around 300kW.
