Video: 2022 BMW 2 Series caught testing in camouflage
BMW's small coupe has been seen ahead of its unveiling at the end of this year.
The 2022 BMW 2 Series has been caught on video testing on a Californian highway by KindelTechAuto.
BMW's small coupe was hidden behind heavy camouflage, with a number of fake pieces added to conceal the details of the new-generation 2 Series.
The current model is one of the oldest vehicles in the German car maker's line-up, introduced in 2014 and now nearing (and living beyond) the end of its eight-year lifecycle.
Unlike the 2 Series Gran Coupe, which uses the same front- and all-wheel-drive architecture as the Mini hatch, the upcoming two-door 2 Series is said to continue with rear-wheel-drive underpinnings, as with the current model.
The camouflage does its best to hide the nose of the car, despite spy photos catching the front of the 2 Series back in April 2020.
The prototype also appears to reintroduce an old style of door handle, reminiscent of those seen on BMW models up until the E34 5 Series and E36 3 Series of the 1990s.
While it's possible it could be a case of misdirection from BMW's engineers, the mule does sport a rather large bonnet hump, but the twin round exhaust tips and conventional mirrors suggest we're looking at a mid-spec 220i or 230i, rather than the performance-focused M240i or M245i, or the flagship M2.
Though yet to be confirmed, sources have told CarAdvice the 2022 BMW 2 Series will be unveiled very late in 2021, and will arrive into BMW showrooms in early 2022.
