2015 Mitsubishi ASX, 2016 Outlander recalled for parking brake shaft fault

Mitsubishi Australia has issued a recall for 8847 examples of the 2015 Mitsubishi ASX and 2016 Mitsubishi Outlander.

According to the recall notice lodged with the Australia Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC), faulty anti-rust (fluorine) coating "may allow rust to form on the parking brake shaft", and in turn "the parking brake shaft may become stuck and may not engage."

"If the parking brake shaft does not engage when the user shifts into a Park position, this could result in unintended vehicle movement. This may increase the risk of an accident, which may result in an injury or death to vehicle occupants, other road users and bystanders", the notice continues.

All 8847 affected vehicles were sold between 23 February 2016 and 30 November 2016, with the ASX models stamped Model Year (MY) 2015, and the affected Outlanders part of MY16. A full list of all affected vehicle identification numbers can be found by clicking here.

Mitsubishi will contact affected owners by mail, advising them to contact their nearest dealer to organise a free repair.
