2021 Peugeot 508 Sport Engineered: French hybrid to cost more than base Porsche 718 Cayman, BMW M340i in Germany

Pricing for the 2021 Peugeot 508 Sport Engineered in Germany has been announced – and it's not as affordable as many expected.

The 508 Sport Engineered – Peugeot's first high-performance, 'Peugeot Sport Engineered' branded plug-in hybrid model – will be priced from €66,640 (AU$105,000) in five-door liftback guise, with the long-roof, enthusiast-favourite wagon variant attracting a €67,940 (AU$107,000) price tag – some €10,000 (AU$16,000) more than a 'standard', optioned-up, top-spec 508 GT plug-in hybrid.

Those figures put the plug-in Peugeot within spitting distance of more premium, high-performance mid-size rivals the likes of the 275kW/500Nm, six-cylinder BMW M340i xDrive, which retails for €63,000 (AU$99,000) in sedan guise and €64,300 (AU$101,000) as a wagon.

It's worth noting the 508 Sport Engineered is bundled with a far wider raft of standard equivalent than the M340i, with features like a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster, 10-inch-plus infotainment touchscreen, adaptive cruise control, head-up display, heated electric seats and a premium-branded sound system all standard on the Peugeot but optional on the BMW.

Option up the M340i xDrive sedan to match the Peugeot and you'll reach a price around the €76,000 (AU$120,000) mark, however. A similarly-specified BMW 330e xDrive – powered by a 2.0-litre four-cylinder plug-in hybrid system, developing 215kW on overboost – retails for around €69,000 in Germany.

While far from a direct competitor in size or target market, an entry-level Porsche 718 Cayman optioned with 20-inch alloy wheels (matching the Peugeot), LED headlights, a PDK dual-clutch automatic transmission and sports seats 'Plus' for similar money as the 508 Sport Engineered sedan.

Unveiled in September 2020, the Peugeot 508 Sport Engineered is powered by a 1.6-litre turbocharged four-cylinder petrol engine mated to two electric motors, sending 265kW of power and 520Nm of torque to all four wheels.

The brand claims a 5.2-second dash from zero to 100km/h, with power for the electrified side of the powertrain drawn from a 11.5kWh lithium-ion battery, good for a 42km all-electric range.

While the model has yet to be locked in for Australian shores, Peugeot's global and local arms are both in favour of an Australian launch for the hot hybrid.

Kate Gillis, Peugeot Citroen Australia general manager, told Australian media in October 2020: "I can say that study has been favourable in supporting the local introduction of the 508 Sport Engineered. Groupe PSA are also keen to see it in a market that's all for performance."

Should the Peugeot 508 Sport Engineered reach our shores, if differences in European versus Australian pricing (namely those of the M340i and 718 Cayman) are any guide, expect a list price before on-road costs just shy of $100,000 Down Under.

That's nearly double the $57,290 and $59,290 figures posted by the turbo-petrol 508 GT sedan and wagon, the sole 508 variants currently offered in Australia.
