Gold Coast rolls out public electric vehicle charging stations

The first of 10 new public charging stations has been installed in the Gold Coast, as part of a scheme to ease range anxiety and increase the uptake of electric vehicles (EV) across the region.

Broadbeach was the first suburb to acquire the new infrastructure, with Coolangatta, Southport, Pimpama, Carrara, Bundall and Nerang set to follow.

Built by Brisbane-based company Tritium, the 75kW DC chargers were funded through a $350,000 contribution from the local government.

Each station – capable of delivering 75km of range in 10 minutes – will be within 50km of another.

According to Gold Coast mayor Tom Tate, "the power used to charge vehicles at these stations will be offset by power generated by the City’s Virtual Power Plant, which harnesses solar energy from more than 47 City buildings.”

Users will reportedly be required to pay $5 for every 10 minutes of use, with this money fed back to the state government.

Drive has approached the Gold Coast council for further comment on the scheme.
