2021 Kia CV electric vehicle leaked in official video

Brand's first standalone EV leaks in Kia video, revealing full-width LED light bar.

Kia's first standalone electric vehicle – codenamed CV – has leaked in an official video from the Korean brand, providing our first glimpse at the production-bound model, and without the heavy camouflage that has adorned prototypes in recent months.

While the poor resolution of the screenshot makes finer design details hard to discern, it's clear the yet-to-be-named EV will draw significant inspiration from the Imagine by Kia concept shown at the 2019 Geneva motor show, with a high-riding, coupe-like shape notably sleeker than Kia's first-ever electric vehicle, the smaller Niro EV.

A full-width, curved LED tail-light bar spans across the width of the rear end, with Kia's new corporate logo (unveiled earlier in January 2021) integrated into the tailgate below. The Korean vehicle's licence plate is mounted in the lower bumper.

While the video doesn't provide a glimpse at the front fascia or side profile of the new EV – which will slot into the mid-size SUV segment – spy photos (below) reveal cab-forward styling with a low front end, slim glasshouse and a rising beltline.

When it is unveiled in full in the next two months, the model will be the first to ride on the Hyundai/Kia group's Electric Modular Global Platform (E-GMP), shared with the upcoming Hyundai Ioniq 5.

Mechanical specifications have yet to be confirmed, however the E-GMP platform employs rear- and all-wheel-drive and an 800V architecture, enabling 3.5-second sprints from zero to 100km/h and a zero to 80 per cent charge on a 350kW DC fast charger in as little as 18 minutes.

It's probable the Kia CV will initially go on sale with similar powertrain specifications as the Hyundai Ioniq 5 at launch, with details leaked in December 2020 revealing the Hyundai will offer a 230kW all-wheel-drive powertrain, a 450-550km range from 58kWh or 73kWh lithium-ion batteries, and a 5.2-second 0-100km/h claim.

A high-performance version of the CV is also slated to be in the works, employing the full capabilities of its E-GMP underpinnings.

Stay tuned to CarAdvice for the Kia CV's full reveal before the end of March 2021.
