Last week rumours suggested Porsche would be unveiling a Porsche Cayman Clubsport at the LA show. The rumours were true, sort of. The company hasn’t called it the ‘CS’ or Clubsport, it’s the Porsche Cayman R. Porsche says the ‘R’ stands for ‘Responsive, Refined and Racy’.
Featuring a similarly focused design, attitude and specification as the rumoured special, the Cayman R uses a 3.4-litre flat six mid-mounted engine which displaces 243kW of power when pushed and can help the car sprint from 0-100km/h in just 4.7 seconds – when optioned with the Sport Chrono pack anyway. But it’s not simply about the increased power over the standard Cayman that makes it an ‘R’.
Porsche says up to 55kg of weight has been shed from the Cayman (now 1295kg) through the use of lighter aluminium doors, lighter sports seats and light-weight 19in wheels – said to weigh less than 10kg each. The body is also lowered by 20mm over the Cayman S and features a fixed rear spoiler, both contributing to improved handling characteristics.
The Cayman R also features a few cosmetic enhancements to set the R apart from the rest of the range. Black headlight surrounds give the car a more aggressive look, whilst ‘PORSCHE’ decals are placed on the doors, giving it classic 911 Carrera presence.
Porsche Australia says the Cayman R will go on sale late in the first quarter of 2011. Prices will start at $165,000 for the six-speed manual version, while the Cayman R fitted with Porsche’s PDK gearbox – which actually provides faster acceleration times; 5.0 seconds for manual, 4.7 seconds for PDK – will cost $170,700 excluding on-road costs.
