Lamborghini Gallardo mechanic beats hoon charge

Remember the mechanic we told you about yesterday who was suspected of speeding in someone else's Lamborghini? He's just walked out of court not only fine-free, he was also awarded $18,000 in costs. Finally, justice in our traffic system?

Leone Antonio Magistro was accused of driving at 160km/h in a 90km/h zone in January this year. The police noticed the Lamborghini Gallardo speeding by and initiated a chase. The police say they reached 160km/h trying to catch up although they didn't actually reach the Lamborghini. They later caught up at a set of traffic lights and accused Mr Magistro of going 155km/h-plus.

In court though, Magistrate Michael Wheeler - an avid Top Gear fan - said,

"With no disrespect to the Ford Falcon (the police were driving), it could not cut the mustard with the Lamborghini. The officers proceeded gallantly and fruitlessly in pursuit. They were simply too far back to do a valid speed check and never got up to a constant velocity."

He also said that it was likely the chasing police officers were accelerating while the Lamborghini was decelerating.

In an unusual turn of events, the court awarded Mr Magistro $18,000 in costs and waved the speeding fine even though Magistro admitted to reaching 130km/h. The police were exceeding their limit of 140km/h without authorisation though, so it's only fair he gets let off.
