2022 Toyota LandCruiser 300 Series caught – UPDATE: Interior spied, turbo V6 confirmed

The hotly-rumoured next-generation LandCruiser has been seen road testing, hinting at what we can expect from the new model.

UPDATE, 5 February 2021: The 2022 Toyota LandCruiser 300 Series has been caught again.

Toyota is currently testing the next-generation LandCruiser in Russia, with these images obtained by website Autospot.

The Russian spies have also confirmed the LandCruiser test vehicle was fitted with a hybrid 3.5-litre twin-turbo V6 powertrain. Japanese media said earlier this week the new model will be offered with the hybrid V6 engine initially, while the 3.3-litre turbo diesel six-cylinder will likely follow.

It's expected the engine will be mated to a 10-speed automatic transmission, sending around 310kW of power and 600Nm of torque to all four wheels.

These are the first images of the new-generation LandCruiser's interior, with leaked information suggesting the start-stop button will also have a fingerprint scanner – identifying the driver and setting the car up according to their personal preferences.

Physical buttons allow 'Mode Select', 'Drive Mode', and Toyota's 'Multi Terrain System' to be easily accessed. Auto descent control, a centre differential lock, turn assist, and the all-important low-range gear selection sits next to the shifter.

A new infotainment screen of approximately 12 inches corner to corner will feature, with buttons available for the climate control and basic stereo commands.

For the driver, analogue gauges remain, with a central digital screen positioned between.

Semi-autonomous cruise control and lane-departure warning controls are mounted on the steering wheel, together with the typical stereo and Bluetooth phone buttons.

The photographer was also able to get some exterior shots, and while the vehicle is covered in plastic normally reserved for shipping, the iconic LandCruiser shape will clearly continue.

At the front, six LED headlights will light the night, with a more aggressive design than seen on previous LandCruiser models, and slimmer LED tail-lights reminiscent of the Toyota RAV4.

14 January 2021: The 2022 Toyota 300 Series LandCruiser has been caught on camera testing in Japan.

It's the first time the new-generation LandCruiser has been seen out in the open, with many reports out of Japan suggesting Toyota's popular off-road SUV will be officially unveiled midway through 2021.

While these blurry pictures from Japanese automotive publication Mag-X give away little, the 300 Series appears to feature a similar daytime-running light signature to the current model, complemented with a set of fog-lights sitting below.

The heavy vinyl does its best to camouflage the car, but it's difficult to hide the vehicle's oversized grille – which is even larger than the present version – and appears to borrow its snout from the American Toyota Tundra pick-up.

This sneak peek suggests the front-end may in fact share a very similar design to the 2022 Toyota Tundra, which was rendered in November based on leaked photos.

Last week, CarAdvice reported an end to orders for the current 200 Series LandCruiser, with production due to end in the coming weeks. This is despite a strong 2020 sales result for the ageing model, which celebrates its 14th birthday this year.

As first reported in June 2019, the venerable 4.5-litre turbo-diesel V8 of the 200 Series is expected to be axed for the model's next generation.

Industry rumours indicate a choice of three powertrains for the 2022 LandCruiser 300 Series: a 3.5-litre twin-turbo petrol V6, a hybrid version of the petrol V6, and an all-new 3.3-litre turbo diesel V6.

Toyota has remained tight-lipped about the upcoming model, but with prototypes undergoing road-testing in Japan, it won't be too long before the new LandCruiser 300 Series is officially revealed.
