2021 Mazda 6 price and specs: Sporty GT SP variant joins line-up

The new turbocharged GT SP replaces the GT in the Mazda 6 range for 2021.

The 2021 Mazda 6 range has been revised for the new year, with a sportier GT SP version being announced.

Following in the footsteps of the CX-9 GT SP, the Mazda 6 GT SP – the Australian equivalent to Japan's Black Tone or the US's Carbon Edition models – utilises a badge previously seen on enthusiast Mazda models such as the turbocharged MX-5 SP and the Mazda 3 SP25.

Like the Mazda 6 GT it replaces, the Mazda 6 GT SP uses the same 2.5-litre turbo petrol four-cylinder engine found in the range-topping Atenza variant, producing 170kW and 420Nm.

Drive is sent to the front wheels through a six-speed automatic transmission. Fuel economy is claimed as 7.0 litres per 100 kilometres on the combined cycle.

Available in either a sedan or wagon, the Mazda 6 GT SP gets burgundy leather with front and rear seat heating, and red stitching throughout the cabin.

The exterior is finished with black mirrors, a set of unique 19-inch alloy wheels painted in metallic black, and 'Turbo' badging. Mazda's adaptive front lighting system is also standard.

The rest of the Mazda 6 range remains mostly unchanged, with buyers given the option of the entry-level Sport or mid-range Touring variant – both available in sedan and wagon, and powered by a 2.5-litre non-turbo four-cylinder offering 140kW/252Nm, also with a six-speed auto driving the front wheels.

Prices have been nudged up for the new year, with the Mazda 6 Sport increasing by $100, and both the Mazda 6 Touring and flagship Mazda 6 Atenza rising by $200.

The biggest difference has been to the new Mazda 6 GT SP, which is $700 more expensive than the GT model it replaces.

All 2021 Mazda 6 models feature LED headlights and tail-lights, power mirrors with heating and folding function, auto wipers, rear parking sensors, and 17-inch alloy wheels on the Sport and Touring grades.

Inside, occupants get an 8.0-inch infotainment screen, which continues to run MZD Connect and not the newer Mazda Connect software found in cars like the Mazda 3 and CX-30. Features include Apple CarPlay and Android Auto capability, Bluetooth, internet radio integration, satellite navigation, reverse camera, USB ports front and rear, push-button start, and dual-zone climate control.

Touring variants add LED daytime running lights, power front seats, keyless entry and start, and front parking sensors.

The flagship Atenza adds a number of features above the new Mazda 6 GT SP, including a glass power sunroof, front seat ventilation, Walnut brown or Pure white Nappa leather seats, a 7.0-inch driver information LCD screen, LED ambient interior lighting, black headlining, real wood trim, synthetic suede door and dashboard upholstery, 360-degree parking cameras, and a heated steering wheel.

The Mazda 6 range has a suite of safety tech as standard, including blind-spot monitoring, driver attention alert, high-beam control, intelligent speed assistance, lane departure warning, lane-keep assist, adaptive cruise control with stop and go, rear cross-traffic alert, autonomous emergency braking, traffic sign recognition, and a tyre-pressure monitoring system.

The 2021 Mazda 6 range goes on sale March 2021.
