VFACTS 2020: Headline models from Peugeot and Renault have big wins

2020 will always be known as a year like no other – and Australia's new-car sales results are in to back that up.

The last two months of the year showed signs of recovery, but for many brands supply remains an issue.

To the end of the 2020 calendar 916,968 new cars were reported as sold – down by 13.7 per cent compared to the prior year. With the Federal Government’s instant asset write-off scheme, demand for utes, SUVs, and four-wheel-drives surged.

There were surprises across the board including from French brands Renault and Peugeot. Like a majority of manufacturers, both had an overall decline in sales, however, saw growth from some of their headline models.

Last year Renault sold a total of 6904 vehicles, down 20 per cent on the previous year. The brand hasn't been a front-runner in the passenger vehicle space in the past, but 2020 was an impressive year for one of its SUV offerings.

The Kadjar small SUV had a notable increase, even though 2019 wasn't a full sales year. Comparative figures for the matching sales months still show a strong increase of 83.3 per cent from the months of September to December.

In mid-2020, Renault announced a price cut across all specifications for the Kadjar, surely a contributing factor to its success. In total the Kadjar sold 500 units during 2020, but in the corresponding four months of 2020 moved 242 vehicles, compared to 132 in 2019.

Renault will continue its SUV assault this year with the arrival of an updated Koleos and, finally, the all-new Arkana small SUV.

Last year Peugeot sold a similar number of cars as it did the year before, down less than three per cent, in a market that has receded over 10 per cent on average.

In 2020, the brand launched its all-new 2008 small SUV, and refreshed its 308 small car range. While neither generated great success, the brand gained a foothold in the saturated commercial segment.

The Partner, sold 190 models in 2020, (42 the year prior). Dropping in September in 2019, comparative year-on-year sales were up 59.5 per cent for the corresponding sales months, with 67 sales over the corresponding period.

The Expert was also a great performer with 294 vehicles sold all up in 2020. As the longest-runner on this list of new 2019 introductions, the Expert was in market for 10 months and amassed 100 sales in that time. Over the same 10 month stretch of 2020 the Expert clocked 280 sales, for a 176 per cent increase.

in 2021, Peugeot plans to introduce an electrified plug-in hybrid version of its most popular vehicle – the 3008 medium SUV.
