Ferrari’s future is a range of all-electric SUVs – report

The much-anticipated 2022 Ferrari Purosangue – the first SUV from the Prancing Horse – is expected to lead a range of electric SUV models.

In a major departure for the Italian supercar brand, Car Magazine is reporting two additional Ferrari SUVs are currently in development featuring fully-electric powertrains.

It's expected the high-riding Purosangue will precede the two all-electric SUVs in 2024 and 2026, with Ferrari embracing an ever-changing regulatory landscape as ever more jurisdictions across the globe look to ban new-car sales of petrol- and diesel-powered passenger vehicles.

The Purosangue – imagined here in a render created by @CarLifestyle on Instagram – is expected to be launched in late 2021 with a 600kW V12 engine and all-wheel drive, with a 522kW hybrid V8 engine likely to follow. The hybrid V8 is thought to be a detuned version of the powertrain fitted to the Ferrari SF90 Stradale, which in that application develops 735kW.

While the Purosangue will stick with petrol-electric hybrid powertrains, the vehicle's chassis architecture has been designed to accommodate a fully-electric powertrain for the two further models that follow.

Reports suggest an 80kWh battery pack could power four electric motors, for a total output of around 450kW – however, with battery technology improving at a rapid rate, it's probable these figures will change for the better by the time the SUVs launch.

YouTube spies Varryx recently caught a Purosangue mule being tested on the roads around Maranello, using a body borrowed from the Maserati Levante.

A new 'baby' supercar powered by a hybrid V6 is also expected to be revealed by Ferrari before the end of 2022, with the intention of stealing sales away from the likes of Porsche.
