2022 Jeep Grand Cherokee spy photos
Next-gen large SUV spied with Wagoner-inspired styling, ahead of expected 2021 reveal.
The next-generation Jeep Grand Cherokee has been spied testing on US roads, ahead of its expected debut sometime in 2021.
Images captured by our spy photography partners reveal the fifth generation of the American brand's large SUV will mark an evolutionary step over its predecessor in the styling department, taking cues from a range of Jeep's newer models.
Up front, the new Grand Cherokee draws heavy inspiration from the upcoming Grand Wagoneer upper-large luxury flagship – revealed earlier this year in concept guise, and pictured in the background of these spy images in camouflaged production form – with a slim, high-mounted interpretation of Jeep's seven-slot grille, flanked by LED headlights.
The headlights appear to be connected by a full-width LED daytime-running light strip, while below the grille assembly sits an arrangement of large air intakes (albeit largely blocked off with textured 3D plastics).
Down the side, a sharp shoulder line and 'Grand Cherokee' front door-mounted badging can be spotted through the camouflage, while at the rear slim tail-lights and pentagonal exhaust outlets headline an upright rear end.
While no images of the new Grand Cherokee's interior were snapped by our spies, a leaked interior rendering posted to social media in August 2019 points towards a far more contemporary design than that of its predecessor, featuring a 10.1-inch digital instrument cluster, 10.1-inch touchscreen and an assortment of premium materials and surfaces.
The option of three rows is also expected to be offered with the new-generation, WL-series model.
It's also likely the cabin will draw inspiration from the Grand Wagoneer concept, which featured a total of four screens for front passengers, with displays ranging from 10.25 to 12.3 inches in size.
The new large SUV is expected to ride on a version of the Giorgio platform underpinning the Alfa Romeo Giulia and Stelvio mid-sizers, stretched to accomodate the two- and three-row Jeeps' circa-five-metre bodies.
A range of petrol and diesel powertrains are expected to be offered across different markets, likely including a mild-hybrid 2.0-litre turbo-petrol four-cylinder, a 3.6-litre 'Pentastar' petrol V6 and a 3.0-litre turbo-diesel V6.
High-performance SRT models powered by naturally-aspirated and supercharged V8 engines are also tipped to carry over to the WL-series Grand Cherokee, while a plug-in hybrid model – potentially sharing components with the plug-in Jeep Wrangler 4xe – is on the cards.
The 2021 Jeep Grand Cherokee is expected to be unveiled sometime in 2021, with the relatively-minimal amounts of camouflage worn by the prototype pictured throughout pointing to a reveal earlier rather than later, likely in the first few months of the year.
