2021 Mercedes-AMG A45 S, CLA45 S gain option of semi-slick Pirelli Trofeo R tyres in Australia

Hyper hatch and sedan score semi-slick Pirelli rubber as an $2500 option for track day enthusiasts.

The 2021 Mercedes-AMG A45 S and 2021 Mercedes-AMG CLA45 S now offer the option of Pirelli P Zero Trofeo R tyres in Australia, as a more track-focused alternative to the cars' existing Michelin Pilot Sport 4 S rubber.

Offered with the all-wheel-drive twins in bespoke, AMG-specific 'M01' specification, the semi-slick P Zero Trofeo R tyres can be had in 245/35 ZR19 and 255/35 ZR19 sizes in Australia, matching the original width, profile and load/speed ratings of the A45 S and CLA45 S respectively.

Mercedes-AMG claims the high-performance Pirelli tyres are designed to "optimise track-day performance in dry and mild ambient conditions" and provide "greater effective grip, increased stability under braking, better lateral rigidity in cornering, and more precise steering response", yet are completely road-legal.

With Mercedes-AMG Australia chief driving instructor Peter Hackett behind the wheel, a Trofeo R-equipped A45 S lapped the Phillip Island circuit near Melbourne some 3.4 seconds faster than an equivalent A45 S (in identical conditions) wearing Michelin Pilot Sport 4 S rubber, with a time of 1 minute 49.43 seconds on the Pirellis, versus the Michelins' 1-minute 52.85-second lap.

Trofeo R rubber is used by an array of ultra high-performance cars around the world, from the high-downforce McLaren Senna hypercar to the most powerful car ever made in Australia, the homegrown 2017 HSV GTS-R W1.

The availability of track-oriented tyres should help the A45 S and CLA45 S's eight-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission and all-wheel-drive system channel all 310kW of power and 500Nm of torque to the ground, derived from the world's most powerful 2.0-litre turbocharged four-cylinder engine.

On the AMG twins' standard-fit Michelin tyres, they claim 0-100km/h sprint times of 3.9 and 4.0 seconds for the A45 S and CLA45 S respectively.

The Pirelli P Zero Trofeo R tyres are now available to order as a "manufacturer-approved accessory" through authorised Mercedes-AMG retailers across Australia.

While prices have yet to be announced officially, estimates peg a full set of the track-focused rubber at around $2500 (or around $600 per set).
