Lamborghini and Ducati not for sale, Volkswagen confirms

Lamborghini and Ducati are safe for the time being.

Since October 2020, industry rumours have suggested Volkswagen Group would be selling both Italian sports car brand Lamborghini and Italian sports bike brand Ducati.

A media release overnight from Volkswagen Group confirmed the company would not be selling either of the two businesses.

"There is agreement on the Board that Lamborghini and Ducati will remain part of the Volkswagen Group," the statement read.

Volkswagen Group CEO Herbert Diess questioned the brands' viability at the time: "Are those really valuable in the new world? We don’t know yet".

The comments came as Volkswagen Group sought to reestablish itself as a leader of electric vehicle manufacturing, investing billions of dollars to transition away from internal combustion engines.

The brand identities of both Lamborghini and Ducati are often said to be intrinsically tied to dramatic petrol-powered engines, raising a question mark as to whether the manufacturers have a future in an electric world.
