The Chinese ute manufacturer looks to shake up the segment with an all-new and – on paper at least – much improved vehicle.

Great Wall Motors (GWM) had a quiet 2020, with its segment-cheapest Steed tallying up just shy of 1700 sales, and not receiving any significant updates.

This might all change however, with the arrival of the all-new GWM Ute Cannon. It's already on sale in 2020, but will have an opportunity to shake up the segment in 2021.

The GWM Ute will be a more expensive proposition, ranging from $33,990 to $40,990 drive-away. This is a significant jump up from the twenty-odd thousand dollars for the previous model, but value remains strong with a long list of standard features.

Under the bonnet is a 2.0-litre turbo-diesel engine that makes 120kW and 400Nm, which runs through a well-known ZF eight-speed automatic transmission. The Cannon also promises to be a much safer ute, thanks to advanced active and passive safety equipment that provide the potential for a five-star ANCAP rating.
