Electric Range Rover: Iconic off-roader gets modern tech

The conversion company – which has previously electrified Jaguar, Bentley and Rolls-Royce vehicles – will sell the Range Rover for $431,000.

Fancy a classic Range Rover with electric power? Start saving… because it isn’t going to be cheap. Lunaz, based in Silverstone, England, is set to start production of electric, classic Ranger Rovers, with a starting price of £245,000 (AU$431,000).

Lunaz is a leading creator of classic electric vehicles and has announced an initial run of 50 Range Rovers from what it calls the ‘classic era’ between 1970 and 1994. Lunaz has previously unveiled Jaguar, Bentley and Rolls-Royce cars with electrification and it seemed like just a matter of time before a Range Rover was on the production line.

According to Lunaz, there’s been plenty of demand for a classic Ranger Rover with a modernised drivetrain, with the overwhelming interest from around the world, leading to a doubling of jobs and an addition to production facilities.

David Lorenz, Founder of Lunaz, is understandably excited by the prospect of reimagining such an iconic vehicle.

“Re-engineering, electrification and upcycling are the solutions to the pressing need to further the legacies of the most significant cars in the world,” he said.

“Adding classic Range Rovers to the Lunaz portfolio answers sustained customer demand for a clean-air expression of the world’s definitive SUV.”

In response to feedback from customers, classic Range Rovers will be offered in both ‘Town’ and ‘Country’ specification grades. Urban focused Town grade will reflect rear seat and driver comfort, reflecting their use as ‘either self-driven luxury vehicles or chauffeured cars’. Buyers can opt for either standard or long wheelbase in the Town specification.

As you’d expect, Country grade will be more off-road focused. There will be ‘a full suite of engineering, tech and design features that augment a full electric classic off-roading experience for the first time’.

Each Lunaz Range Rover will undergo a complete bare metal restoration and re-engineering process ahead of conversion to the company’s proprietary electric powertrain. The reliability and ease of an electric powertrain from a use and servicing perspective means, much of the trepidation that comes with old vehicle ownership is no longer a factor for buyers.

Country specification will run a 4WD system, and an updated suspension system with anti-roll bars, and uprated brakes. As you’d expect of the price point, the cabin will be significantly upgraded, modernised and moved away from its original utilitarian purpose.  Lunaz has extensive experience now in melding modern technology and functionality into classic architecture, so the interior won’t look like an afterthought.

Each classic Range Rover will be tailored extensively to the buyer’s individual tastes – as befits the hand-built nature of the recreations. Lunaz Design Director Jen Holloway will meet with each buyer to map out exactly what the buyer wants to do with their electric Rangie.

Country specification could for example, have a range of custom storage or boot options for camping or off-road gear. Town cars can be specified with a bar area so that chauffeured passengers can live in the lap of luxury.

Lunaz isn’t only concerned with the cars that it builds, but the concept of the circular economy. “Our mission is to deliver pinnacle cars whilst exhausting significantly fewer resources than goes into the production and lifecycle of a new vehicle,” David Lorenz added.

“With major market bans on the sale of new internal combustion engine vehicles being brought forward, there is a pressing requirement for industry to find viable alternatives to scrapping the estimated two billion internal combustion vehicles that will exist by 2030. Furthering the legacies of classic cars through electrification will preserve their life and make them a relevant and usable proposition for a new generation.”
