Mercedes-Benz Vans developing all-new eSprinter architecture
Parent company Daimler is investing upwards of €350 million (AU$566 million) into the modular skateboard platform, which will likely be delivered by 2023.
Mercedes-Benz Vans is engineering an all-new platform to underpin its next-generation eSprinter models, according to parent company Daimler.
Known as the Electric Versatility Platform (EVP), the modular architecture will reportedly be compatible with three battery sizes and a wide spate of body configurations.
Power and range specifications are yet to be announced, however the manufacturer has confirmed all variants will be rear-wheel drive.
The development process – which will cost an estimated €350 million (AU$566 million) – is expected to be completed by 2023.
"The next generation eSprinter will enable us to make many more body variants available,” said Marcus Breitschwerdt, Head of Mercedes-Benz Vans.
“This will ensure we meet the requirements of our customers across multiple sectors in the future, while offering the advantages of locally emission-free electric drive," he added.
The current eSprinter – which has a modest range of just 154km – is not currently sold in Australia.
A spokesperson for Mercedes-Benz Vans Australia told CarAdvice that local availability for the next-generation eSprinter is "still to be determined".
