Porsche Australia to unveil 70th anniversary special edition in 2021
Porsche Cars Australia has confirmed the arrival of a new, Australia-only special edition model in 2021, intended to commemorate the 70th anniversary of the brand's presence Down Under.
Few details of the limited-edition model have been confirmed, with the brand's local division merely stating it will be finished in Fish Silver Grey Metallic, a new colour developed by Porsche Exclusive Manufaktur and in collaboration with the 'Style Porsche' design team.
The new hue will pay tribute to one of the first Porsche models imported to Australia back in 1951, a 356 cabriolet, finished in fish silver grey – a car which, alongside a maroon 356 coupe imported at the same time, is still on the road today (second from bottom).
The German brand has even yet to announce which model the special edition – due to be unveiled in the first half of 2021 – will be based on, but given its inspiration was took the shape of a two-seater, rear-engined convertible, we'd wager the 2021 car will be derived from the latest 911 Cabriolet.
Alongside the special edition, Porsche Cars Australia will celebrate its 70th anniversary with an array of special events, commencing this weekend at Melbourne's Sandown Raceway with a one-off, non-championship event for Porsche motorsport competitors.
The Porsche Payce Michelin Cup held at the circuit will see both 991.1 and 991.2 generations of the 911 GT3 Cup racer face off on the track for the first time, while three sprint events for members of the Porsche Club of Victoria will also take place.
A pre-production Porsche Taycan – the first all-electric Porsche, its launch coinciding with the brand's local 70th anniversary – will also be on hand to participate in an 'on-track speed comparison'.
“Porsche and Australia have a close bond and tradition and Australians love our sportscars, especially the iconic Porsche 911,” said Detlev von Platen, executive board member for Sales and Marketing at Porsche.
“Our Australian fans are keen on everything Porsche’s DNA is about: sportiness, performance and an emotional design – this hasn’t changed in seven decades,” he added.
The 2021 special edition follows in the tracks of the Porsche 911 1965 Reimagined, a limited-run special edition launched earlier this year paying homage to the first 911 ever sold in Australia, thanks to Crayon paintwork, Agave Green interior trim, Paldao Dark timber trim inlays, five-spoke alloy wheels and more.
