2021 Genesis GV70 detailed: Turbocharged engines, advanced safety confirmed for luxury SUV

Details of Genesis's BMW X3 competitor released, headlined by a 280kW twin-turbo V6 flagship.

Further details of the 2021 Genesis GV70 have been handed down today, confirming the Korean mid-size luxury SUV's engine line-up and active safety suite.

Three engines will be offered by Genesis, for a line-up identical to the larger G80 sedan: a 280kW/530Nm 3.5-litre twin-turbocharged petrol V6, a 224kW/422Nm 2.5-litre turbocharged petrol four-cylinder, and a 155kW/441Nm 2.2-litre twin-turbo diesel four-cylinder.

While yet to be confirmed, all engines will likely send drive to the tarmac via an eight-speed automatic transmission. All-wheel-drive is standard on the V6 and optional on the four-cylinder models, the latter paired with rear-wheel-drive as standard.

Genesis claims a 5.1-second 0-100km/h sprint time for flagship twin-turbo V6-equipped models, when using the onboard launch control system.

The aforementioned acceleration figure matches up favourably to the GV70's sporty mid-size SUV competitors, including the 265kW/500Nm BMW X3 M40i and its 4.8-second claim.

Each engine can be had in 'Sport' trim (pictured in red), featuring unique front and rear styling, 21-inch alloy wheels and an electronically-controlled limited-slip rear differential.

All-wheel-drive models feature 'Multi Terrain Control' drive modes designed for snow, sand and mud, while 'Preview Electronic Control Suspension' can be optioned, which uses cameras and the satellite navigation system to pre-emptively manage the car's adaptive dampers around corners or over bumps.

The GV70 measures in 4715mm long, 1910mm wide and 1630mm tall, with a 2875mm wheelbase.

Details of the GV70's active safety suite have been confirmed, with features on certain variants including autonomous emergency braking with pedestrian detection and support for intersections, forward collision alert, blind-spot monitoring and rear cross-traffic alert, with the latter pair capable of detecting and braking for obstacles.

Genesis's latest Level 2 'Highway Driving Assist II' semi-autonomous driving aids are also on offer, capable of accelerating, braking and steering the GV70 within its lane on the motorway, and able to change lanes autonomously with a flick of the indicator stalk.

There's also Advanced Rear Occupant Alert, notifying drivers of young passengers and pets left in the rear seats, along with augmented reality-based navigation, a biometric fingerprint sensor inside the cabin for locking personal data when at a valet, and navigation-enhanced adaptive cruise control, traffic-sign recognition and driver attention warning.

Eight airbags are on offer, including one between the front seats – a criterion needed for a five-star ANCAP rating in 2020.

While few new details have been released regarding the Genesis GV70's exterior or interior design – see our original reveal story for more details, by clicking here – the brand has confirmed 13 exterior colours will be available, including Mauna Red (pictured) and Barossa Burgundy, the latter available in metallic and matte forms.

A dual-piece cabin filtration system will also be offered, capable of extracting fine and ultra-fine dust from the interior, and able to remove 99.9 per cent of interior 'bioaerosols' in 10 minutes, via a specific antibacterial mode.

The 2021 Genesis GV70 will go on sale in Australia in the first half of 2021. Full local pricing and specifications will be announced closer to launch.
