2021 Volkswagen Tiguan model range outlined, expected to be top-selling VW next year

The Tiguan SUV is expected to overtake the Golf as Volkswagen’s top-selling model locally in 2021.

The Volkswagen Tiguan SUV is expected to overtake the Golf hatchback in Australia next year – bringing the models into line with their new global sales rankings – once the updated version arrives in local showrooms.

The Tiguan SUV almost outsold the Golf in Australia this year, but its sales surge was blunted by production interruptions caused by COVID-19.

So far this year, Volkswagen Australia has sold 9364 Golf hatchbacks versus 8567 Tiguan SUVs.

However, based on current projections, the Tiguan will overtake the Golf in 2021 – despite the arrival of a new Golf early next year.

Volkswagen has released preliminary details about the 2021 VW Tiguan SUV, which is due some time between March and June next year.

All models will come with a full suite of advanced safety technology (including city and highway autonomous emergency braking, radar cruise control, blind zone warning, rear cross-traffic alert and lane-keeping assistance), wireless Apple Car Play and wireless Android Auto, minor styling tweaks, and a streamlining of engine options.

Diesel will return as an option in the regular Tiguan range, but petrol will be available across all grades.

The 2021 line-up will start with the VW Tiguan Life, progress to the VW Tiguan Elegance, and VW Tiguan R-Line, with a mix of petrol or diesel – and front-drive or all-wheel-drive, as per preliminary details listed below.

Top-end models will also be available with matrix LED headlights, and premium audio.

“We expect Tiguan to be our largest selling model in the … range,” said Jeff Shafer, Volkswagen Australia product marketing manager. “As we saw the return of diesel into the Tiguan Allspace, diesel power also returns in the new Tiguan, but not as the 140, but a new 147-kilowatt diesel.”

The 2021 Volkswagen Tiguan range is due in local showrooms in the second quarter of 2021.
