The first allocation of Hyundai i20 N hot hatches were sold online last night as part of an Instagram Shop promotion.

The online portal was open from 6pm to midnight last night and has now closed.

The Instagram customers were guaranteed a car from the first shipment due to arrive in the first half of next year.

Hyundai Australia received 18 pre-orders for the first-generation Hyundai i20 N, even though price and specification are yet to be released.

"We're really pleased with the response and the interest in this car," said Hyundai Australia spokesman Bill Thomas. "We're really excited to introduce the i20 N in Australia in the first half of next year."

Fully refundable deposits of $500 were required to secure a place in the queue for the first batch.

Price is yet to be announced but Hyundai Australia is believed to be targeting the Ford Fiesta ST's RRP of $32,290 plus on-road costs.

The Hyundai i20 N promotion was another example of a gradual shift to – and experimentation with – online new-car sales.

Recent examples of cars sold via online portals include the VW Amarok W580, the Toyota GR Yaris and Toyota Supra, and the original Subaru BRZ.
