McLaren Sabre patent images surface online

Top-secret new model expected to follow the track-focused Senna in McLaren's Ultimate Series line-up.

Patent images for an upcoming McLaren – believed to be the Ultimate Series successor to the Senna – have surfaced online.

The drawings show a dramatic design – with by a sideboard-mounted rear wing, large front splitter, cooling ducts, and an elongated central 'shark' fin – although it is unclear if this is a track-only model, or will be eligible for road use in some countries, as per the Senna.

The vehicle is expected to be underpinned by McLaren’s new lightweight carbon fibre architecture, and will likely be powered by a hybrid version of McLaren's 4.0-litre twin-turbocharged V8 producing about 845kW.

Overseas reports suggest the model will be named the Sabre, however an official designation is yet to be been confirmed.

A spokesperson for the manufacturer was unable to provide further details when approached by CarAdvice for comment.

Earlier this year spy shots emerged of what is believed to be the same car (shown below), at a dealership in California.

According to the source that supplied those pictures, only 15 examples of the new model will be produced, and the car could cost close to US$4.4 million (AU$6.1 million).

However, CarAdvice was not able to independently verify those claims.

It is expected the model won't be formally unveiled until 2022.
