2022 Genesis G70 Coupe imagined

Genesis has yet to reveal any clear evidence of a return to the coupe game, but with some obvious rivals in the BMW, Benz and Audi camps, a G70 Coupe could be just the ticket for a stylish brand builder.

In almost no time at all Hyundai’s upmarket arm, Genesis, has built itself from nicer versions of Hyundai cars, to a fully-fledged premium contender.

If Genesis wants to play with the likes of Mercedes-Benz and BMW it is missing one key product, for now. A svelte two-door would be the ideal profile-builder, while taking a swipe at the established C-Class and 4 Series coupes.

The master of renderings at CarAdvice, Theophilus Chin, has imagined what a G70 Coupe might look like, and the results are promising.

Cleverly, Genesis has stuck to its main game so far, with mid-, large- and limo-sized sedans, plus a large SUV with a mid-sizer on the way. It’s also gone a little Euro-centric with a G70 wagon spied undergoing testing.

A G70 Coupe would be the icing on the cake, with the organic G70's 'Athletic Elegance' design language just begging to be trimmed down into a svelte two-door form.

Obviously a lowered roofline is essential for this transformation, along with lengthened doors and frameless windows. Plumping out the rear quarter panels also lends some serious proportional weight to the unabashedly rear-wheel-drive (well, all-wheel-drive in this instance) coupe.

Other than that, the basic G70 package doesn’t need to be fettled much at all. The front and rear ends are straight from the sedan with some new light-piped internals at the rear. The Quad Light treatment (as Genesis calls it) blends in with the raked C-pillar just fine with the help of a shortened boot.

If anything, the G70’s shield-face looks even more at home on the coupe than it does on the G70 sedan.

Genesis itself doesn’t have much in the way of two-door history to draw on, while the brand has rolled out concepts like the supercar-stled Essentia in 2018 and compact Mint in 2019, neither was a traditional three-box coupe.

The Hyundai Genesis did, however, spawn a coupe body. Built more as a performance rival nestled in alongside cars like the Toyota 86 and low-output Mustangs, the Hyundai Genesis Coupe stood out, largely thanks to its dipped belt line.

With accessible performance and rear-wheel-drive dynamics, the old Genesis Coupe became a hit with grassroots motorsport and drift crowds in the United States. It certainly never troubled the prestige set, nor was that really its intention.

The current G70 engine options are already well and truly up to the task among performance-luxury rivels with a 2.0-litre four-cylinder turbo opening the range at 185kW/353Nm, while a 3.3-litre V6 turbo with 272kW/510Nm would have cars like M440i and C43 on notice.

Sadly, while a wagonised G70 has been spied testing (and we’ve penned what it might look like already), a G70 Coupe is purely the work of active imaginations for now.

Water cooler chat around the CarAdvice office suggests Genesis would have a hit on its hands, but we’d love to know what you think. Let us know in the comments if you’d like to see a Genesis G70 Coupe brought to life, or if Genesis would be better pouring its time and effort into other projects.
