2021 Volkswagen Amarok W580 online ordering goes live this week

The 2021 VW Amarok W580 will go on sale online from midday this Thursday, with the first 30 customers treated to an all-expenses-paid “money can’t buy” experience, including a V8 Supercar track day.

One of Australia’s most powerful utes – and soon the only one with a turbo diesel V6 and constant all-wheel-drive once the Mercedes X-Class is axed – gains a mild styling makeover and a new, locally-developed wheel and tyre package (and a wider track) for even more car-like handling.

The Volkswagen Amarok W580 is a joint project between the German automotive giant and the Walkinshaw Automotive Group, for three decades the outfit behind Holden Special Vehicles and the Holden Racing Team.

Although final pricing and details are due to be released later this week, Volkswagen dealers have been told there will be two models: a W580 and a W580S.

The W580 will be priced between $65,000 and $70,000 while the W580S is expected to cost between $75,000 and $80,000, dealers have been advised.

Orders will initially be via Volkswagen’s website – the online ordering portal is due to go live at midday on Thursday December 3 – before the vehicle becomes available at all VW dealerships.

The first shipments of the Volkswagen Amarok W580 are due to arrive in local showrooms in April 2021, and will become a full-time – albeit limited – member of the VW line-up.

The VW Amarok W580 – based on the Highline model grade – is shipped to Australia in a partially completed form before it is transformed into a W580 on the same assembly line previously used for the HSV Colorado SportsCat.

The facility is also adjacent to the assembly line that converts Ram 1500 and Chevrolet Silervado 1500 pick-ups from left-hand-drive to right-hand-drive.

For the VW Amarok W580, Walkinshaw’s engineering team developed a unique suspension, wheel and tyre package for improved on-road performance – as well as styling updates, including wider fender flares to accomodate the larger footprint

Due to the prohibitive cost of a new round of emissions testing, the power output is the same as the current Amarok 580. However, free-flowing dual exhaust extensions are said to help the engine breathe better and improve responsiveness.

Prices and specifications for the 2021 VW Amarok W580 will be published later this week once the Volkswagen online ordering portal goes live.
