2022 Toyota Tundra leaked and rendered ahead of big debut

The 2022 Toyota Tundra has been leaked online in a series of low-quality photos.

Images posted on Instagram by @car_secrets show distinctive Y-shaped headlights for the upcoming third-generation Toyota pick-up.

The Tundra is Toyota's answer to the Ford F-150, Chevrolet Silverado, and RAM 1500, with the full-size pick-up being built in the US since 1999.

The current model first went into production in 2007, receiving a major update in 2014.

Following the leaked photos, illustrator Ali Angorani has rendered an interpretation of the 2022 Toyota Tundra (shown above), published by website CarsBite.

Despite the V8 pick-up being on Toyota Australia's wishlist for a number of years, senior executive Sean Hanley told CarAdvice in December 2019 the business case for offering the car locally was weak.

"Right now we don’t have any plans to bring that vehicle to market, but we certainly continue to study it and study other opportunities," Mr Hanley said at the time.

CarAdvice approached Toyota Australia about this story and a spokesperson provided this statement: "We are continually revising our model line-up, however there are currently no plans to bring the Tundra to Australia and would also not rule out its introduction in the future, if a strong enough business case can be built for it".

It's estimated local sales of the Tundra would equal less than 10,000, making a local development program difficult to justify financially.
