2021 Nissan X-Terra: Navara-based SUV unveiled for overseas markets

The Navara-based X-Terra has been launched in the Middle East and South-East Asia, but don't hold your breath for a local release.

The 2021 Nissan X-Terra has been revealed for Middle Eastern and South-East Asian markets.

Much like previous-generations of the Nissan Pathfinder, the new X-Terra places an SUV body on Navara ute underpinnings.

While the model would theoretically compete against the Toyota Fortuner, Mitsubishi Pajero Sport, and Ford Everest in Australia – all of which are body-on-frame, off-road SUVs – the X-Terra was never designed to meet Australia's stricter design rules, and thus won't be heading for our shores.

In the Middle East, Nissan's new seven-seater X-Terra gets a 2.5-litre petrol four-cylinder engine producing 123kW and 240Nm, mated to a seven-speed automatic transmission. Buyers have a choice of rear-wheel drive or four-wheel drive.

However, in South-East Asian markets, the X-Terra is fitted with a powertrain familiar to Australian Navara buyers: a 140kW/450Nm 2.3-litre twin-turbo four-cylinder diesel, mated to a seven-speed automatic.

Those heading off-road get a low-range transmission mode, lockable electronic limited-slip differential, hill descent control, and hill start assist.

The flagship Premium trim in Middle Eastern markets gets lane-departure warning, blind-spot monitoring, forward collision alert, rear cross-traffic alert, driver fatigue monitoring and autonomous emergency braking.

Inside, front occupants get an 9.0-inch infotainment screen with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, while the rear passengers get to enjoy an 11.0-inch roof-mounted flip-down screen with HDMI input.

It's worth noting the new Nissan X-Terra is a heavily facelifted version of the previous Nissan Terra, gaining the brand's latest design language, with new LED 'boomerang' headlights and revised tail-lights.

A spokesperson for Nissan Australia has told CarAdvice there are currently no plans to bring the X-Terra here.
