2022 Genesis G70 Shooting Brake wagon spied testing, Australian arm keen

Wagon version of Genesis's mid-sizer could make its way to Australia if it joins the sedan in right-hand drive production.

A prototype of the upcoming Genesis G70 Shooting Brake has been spied testing on the Nurburgring this week, marking just the latest appearance of the new long-roof variant.

The last time we wrote about the new G70 wagon, the mid-sized sedan's facelift had not yet been revealed, leaving a little more mystery as to how this new variant might look.

Likewise, Genesis had not yet unveiled the G70's SUV sibling, the GV70 – which, as these spy photos suggest, offers what is likely a strong hint of what we can expect from the G70 wagon's rear styling.

But, while the GV70's C-pillar forms a sharp angle at its forward edge, the G70 wagon's C-pillar will take on a more rounded form – almost as though the sedan's rear window and deck have been cut out to make room for a wagon roof, leaving a conventional sedan-like glasshouse ahead of it.

A novel cost-saving approach to re-using the sedan's rear doors?

Not quite, because the sedan's C-pillar and upper rear door shape actually form a distinctly different shape to that of the wagon (see our side-by-side images below), meaning that this is a deliberate styling choice rather than a purely economical one.

As for when we'll see the G70 wagon revealed, the company has yet to offer any official confirmation of the model's production future, but we expect an unveiling event to occur sometime in the first half of the middle of 2021.

And, while the G70's rivals can almost all be had in wagon form – think BMW 3 Series, Mercedes-Benz C-Class and Audi A4 – It is unclear if the G70 wagon would come to Australia, although a Genesis spokesperson has touched on its viability and confirmed the Australian arm's interest.

“Whilst we can confirm that a G70 Shooting Brake concept is being evaluated, no decision has been made yet as to whether it will go into production,” the spokesperson told CarAdvice today.

“Given G70 is already produced in right-hand drive, a ‘Shooting Brake’ variant would be viable and a great addition to the G70 range in Australia, if it were to make it into production.”

The year ahead will be a relatively full one for the Genesis brand in Australia, bringing not only the facelifted G70 sedan and new GV70 SUV in the first half of the year, but also the brand's first electric vehicle – expected to reach Australia sometime in 2021.

These will follow the recent local launches for the big new G80 sedan and GV80 SUV.

Watch for more on the G70 Shooting Brake to surface in the months ahead.
