Porsche has set a new Guinness world record for the longest continuous drift in an electric vehicle (EV).
Porsche Experience Centre (PEC) chief instructor Dennis Retera recorded 210 laps around the 200-metre wet circular skidpad at the brand's Experience Centre at the Hockenheimring circuit in Germany.
Verified by Guinness World Records, Retera sat behind the wheel of a pre-production, rear-wheel-drive version of Porsche's Taycan electric sedan, currently exclusive to the Chinese market (though a European and American launch is expected in 2021).
Powering the rear-drive EV is a choice of two lithium-ion batteries mounted in the floor which, when the larger 93.4kWh pack is selected, can extract up to 350kW of power from the car's single rear-mounted electric motor.
"Nevertheless, it was also very tiring for me to keep my concentration high for 210 laps, especially as the irrigated asphalt of the drift circuit does not provide the same grip everywhere", said Retera after his 55-minute record-setting run, completing a total distance of 42.171km at an average speed of 46km/h.
"I concentrated on controlling the drift with the steering – this is more efficient than using the accelerator pedal and reduces the risk of spinning”, he added.
The record attempt occurred under the eye of Guinness World Record officials, who validated the record by checking data from the GPS, yaw and other sensors attached to the Taycan, observing the camera footage taken from the top of the skidpad's control tower, and even by employing a land surveyor to measure the area of the skidpad with "millimetre precision".
While the rear-wheel-drive Taycan might have broken the record for the longest all-electric drift, the overall world record for the longest continuous drift in a vehicle remains with the latest BMW M5.
Set in 2018, BMW driving instructor Johan Schwartz slid across a distance of 374km over eight hours, and famously employed a second, previous-generation M5 drifting in tandem alongside the record car to refuel it.
The rear-drive Porsche Taycan isn't offered in Australia, instead leaving the local range to be opened by the $190,400 before on-road costs, all-wheel-drive Taycan 4S.
