Toyota GR Yaris stock sold out, Australia negotiating for more cars late next year

The Toyota GR Yaris has sold the first allocation of 1100 cars and executives in Australia are now scrambling to secure a new round of production in the second half of next year.

When Toyota Australia announced a promotional price of $39,950 drive-away for the first 1000 cars, it expected stock would carry the brand for a year. Instead, the first 1000 cars sold out in one week.

Toyota then allocated a further 100 vehicles at $44,950 drive-away, however they took less than a month to clear.

There may be a handful of cars in dealerships – or coming into stock – that are not accounted for, after deals fell over.

However, as far as Toyota Australia is concerned, the first 1100 GR Yaris cars are spoken for – and it is now negotiating with Japan for a new production allocation for the second half of next year.

The sell-out of the first 1100 examples does not include the 250 Toyota GR Yaris Rallye editions.

Dealers have been told the price for the track-focused model will be announced on 26 November, however Toyota Australia is yet to confirm the timing or the price.

Last week CarAdvice reported that internal dealer pricing showed the Toyota GR Yaris Rallye was listed at $49,950 plus on-road costs, and was estimated to be between $53,500 and $53,900 drive-away.

However, Toyota sources have since indicated this holding price may have been put into the system in error.

A statement issued today by Toyota Australia said: "Extraordinary demand ... has resulted in the stock available at special offer prices being fully subscribed".

The bulletin continued: "Customers (who) have placed orders for the first 1000 vehicles at $39,950 drive-away and a further 100 vehicles at $44,950 drive-away" will have their orders honoured.

"A small amount of remaining stock at dealerships will be on-sold to customers as available," the Toyota statement said.

"The GR Yaris has exceeded expectations and ignited the market,” said Toyota Australia vice president sales and marketing Sean Hanley, who added that the pricing is "genuinely attainable".

"Toyota Australia is negotiating to receive further supply ... potentially arriving in the second half of 2021. Details including pricing will be announced in due course," said the Toyota statement, indicating the price may change when the next batch arrives.

"The special-edition GR Yaris Rallye remains on track for introduction in the first half of 2021, with pricing and details to be announced later," said the Toyota statement.
