2021 Ford E-Transit revealed overseas, but Australia could miss out on the electric van

Ford says the new electric Transit was measured using the newer and more accurate WLTP test, with the 350km range available thanks to a 67kWh battery, sending power to the rear wheels through a 198kW/430Nm electric motor.

On the stricter EPA test cycle used in the US, the E-Transit records a less competitive 202km range figure.

Even with the larger battery pack – which is mounted under the body to maintain dimensions in the cargo area – buyers still get 1616kg of payload, or 1967kg in the cab-chassis variant.

Builders and tradies can also use the van's batteries to power their tools when working on-site, with charging taking around 8.2 hours through its built-in AC charger.

It can also accept DC fast charging at a rate of up to 115kW, enabling 72km of range to be added in just 15 minutes.

Those living in extreme climates can program the van's heater or air conditioner to turn on at a certain time, ensuring the cabin is the right temperature before heading off on the morning commute.

Once on the road, drivers benefit from Ford's SYNC 4 infotainment system via a 12.0-inch touchscreen, and intelligent adaptive cruise control.

Safety features include traffic sign recognition, intelligent speed assist, pre-collision assist, blind-spot assist, lane-change assist, reverse brake assist, and a 360-degree camera system.

Ford says running costs are lowered by around 40 per cent compared with traditional petrol- and diesel-powered Transit vans, thanks to lower maintenance expenses and fuel bills.

Will the 2021 Ford E-Transit come to Australia?

At this stage, it appears as if the fully-electric E-Transit will only be offered within Europe, due in part to far stricter emissions laws being introduced in that part of the world from 2021.

Ford Australia Communications Director, Matt Moran, told Drive: "While we have no local plans for the vehicle to share today, we always look to the best of our global portfolio for vehicles that suit the emerging needs of Australian customers".
