- 2021 Mercedes-AMG GLS 63 4MATIC+ and GLE 63 S 4MATIC+ officially launched for Australian market
- 4.0-litre twin-turbo V8 producing 450kW/850Nm
- 48-volt hybrid system capable of delivering 16kW/250Nm boost when needed
- Electronically limited top speed of 280km/h on both models
The high-performance hybrid SUVs derive power primarily from a twin-turbo 4.0-litre V8, which sends a mammoth 450kW/850Nm to all four wheels via a nine-speed automatic transmission.
An EQ Boost starter-alternator supplements power delivery when it’s most needed, with a 48-volt on-board system capable of providing an extra 16kW and 250Nm at take-off while simultaneously acting as a power generator.
Meanwhile, the AMG Performance 4MATIC+ all-wheel-drive system actively modulates delivery to each corner of the car for maximum grip and efficiency at all times.
This helps the GLE 63 S model accelerate from zero to 100km/h in a claimed 3.8 seconds, while the GLS 63 gets the same sprint done in a still-impressive 4.2 seconds.
Both variants are electronically limited to a top speed of 280km/h.
The engine is equipped with a partial shut-off function that deactivates four cylinders to reduce fuel consumption when they aren’t needed.
That said, the GLE 63 S is still thirsty with a fuel consumption rating label average of 12.4 litres per 100km. The GLS 63 is rated at 13.0 litres per 100km.
AMG's newly-updated "active ride control" roll stabilisation system allows for improved handling and better ride quality.
Also featured are “active dynamic engine mounts,” which are capable of softening the connection between the chassis and the powertrain for added comfort when needed, while similarly increasing rigidity for performance driving.
Eight driver modes can be selected to match condition and driver preferences. These comprise Comfort, Individual, Slippery, Trail, Sand, Sport, Sport+ and RACE.
In Sport, Sport+, and RACE modes the vehicle is automatically lowered by 10mm at speeds above 120km/h, to improve stability and reduce drag.
The GLE 63 S model is fitted as standard with 21-inch AMG 5-twin-spoke high-sheen black alloys.
Inside, the S gets front seats finished with AMG-exclusive Nappa leather, an AMG Performance steering wheel, and the MBUX ‘High’ infotainment system.
Four-zone climate control, seat and armrest heating, temperature-controlled cupholders in the front, power-closing doors, Burmester surround sound system, and a panoramic glass sunroof also come standard, as does a suite of safety features including Active Traffic Assist, "pre-safe" impulse side crash preparation system, Active Parking Assist, and Traffic Sign Assist.
Meanwhile, GLS 63 adds five-zone climate control, the MBUX Innovation Package with MBUX Interior Assistant, MBUX Augmented Reality for Navigation, and 22-inch AMG multi-spoke alloys to its standard specification.
